You should know that God cannot be known
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:11:57 AM »
You should know that God cannot be known

Veda also says that God is un-imaginable, who is beyond words, mind, intelligence and logic and hence God alone knows God (Brahmavit Brahmaiva...). You should know that God cannot be known (Yasyaamatam…). But such God enters the world through a medium (Tadevaanu Praavishat...) and God becomes that medium while keeping His separate identity of His real form (Satchatyatcha...).

Therefore, the essence of the Veda is very clear that the absolute God is un-imaginable, He enters a human being as a medium for the sake of preaching knowledge and He remains in His original form and at the same time gets identified with the human form also.

The second authority is ‘Smruti’, which is, the text written by sages consisting of the three great epics dealing with the human incarnations like Rama and Krishna. The third authority is reasoning, which is already taken up from the beginning of this message. The logical analysis always helps to get the correct interpretation of both ‘Shruti’ and ‘Smruti’. The fourth authority is the experience of divine scholars. Hanuman is the greatest scholar, who learnt all the scriptures from the sun. Gopikas are also the incarnations of great sages, who are the greatest scholars of the scriptures. Both Hanuman and Gopikas worshipped the contemporary human incarnations only and not the statues of energetic forms of God or the past human incarnations. Hanuman never worshipped the statues of past human incarnations like Parashurama and Vamana or the statues of energetic forms like Shiva and Vishnu. Similarly, gopikas did not worship the statues of Rama or the statues of Vishnu and Shiva. Therefore, all the four authorities clearly indicate that human beings should worship the human form of God only for the salvation.

It is amazing that anyone can try to comprehend God. If anyone truly knew everything about God, if that was ever possible, how could they worship Him then?

How would it be possible for someone to comprehend and understand one who knows all. That would, in effect, result in the individual having infinite knowledge superior to God would it not?

You know God by recognizing you are one with God.  If God is everything then you are part of him and thus it becomes a matter of knowing yourself on a deeper, higher, broader level.  This can only occur if you are willing to let go of your ego, as your ego is afraid of losing it's individuality.  This is a core teaching from the Course of Miracles.  If you can accept that you are more than your physical mind and earthly perspectives, you can begin to tap into a higher level of consciousness, especially if you work on this during meditation.

Know too that God wants to experience the infinite diversity of creation and different perspectives, and you are part of that process.  So you are essentially God experiencing one point of view through your unique and important part of this.  This makes perfect sense to me, why would God just want to sit there and do nothing?  Your own desire to create and experience is coming from God and an extension of what God desires.

I agree we can never comprehend God in it's entirety however we shouldn't think of God as something separate from us.

God is known in the heart. You can feel God. One doesn't have to know all the schematics of God, just like you do not need to know them of a car to know it is. Non believers will always try to 'open up' believers' eyes, while believers will always try to 'open up' non believers' hearts. Both sides are searching.

I could agree that faith helps us know God more and more as we live our lives.
It helps us feel the presence of the Creator even in the smallest part of our daily activities. We could always be thankful for the blessings that we are receiving that shows our recognition that it was a gift from God. Only Him can know everything. So, it is very true that we could feel Him inside our heart through the daily miracles of life itself.

The daily miracle of life itself is decent with modification, and natural selection.  What could be more miraculous than that?  Why do you require the God Hypothesis?  If it's an emotional necessity then it is fully understandable in the context of the human mind.  You require answers to questions that we likely will never have the answers to, you require a stated purpose to a life that likely has no end purpose.  The "purpose" is simply to live, love, treat other with respect and don't dampen their ability to live, love, and treat others with respect.  I am fully seated in the human continuum without the need (or want) of dark age superstition.  Would you still apply leeches to cure sickness?  Would you still say incantations over the raving madman instead of giving him Lithium?  We evolve intellectually, morally, ethically, and spiritually without belief in a supreme being (or beings depending on what part of the world you were born)

You should "know" that god cannot be "known."

The first point to be noted is that we don't know god. And we don't know god because god cannot be known.

Now, if someone came along and declared that they "know" god, you would respond that it is not possible because god cannot be known. If the person replies by stating what they know of god, you would reply that that is not a true definition or description of god. The other person would then ask, "how do you know that?"

You see the problem? How can you say god cannot be known if you don't know god? That is to say, if you don't know god, how do you even know that you've never seen god? This means that you must have some idea of god to be able to judge if someone's description of god is true or not.

And this problem will always remain because we cannot agree on a definition of god. And who are we to define god? And how do we even go about coming up with a definition?

But how did you get this idea of god in the first place? If you say you got it from the scriptures, then the people who wrote the scriptures must have known god. So it is possible to know god. If you say that the scriptures are the word of god, then that means god has indicated what he/she/it is like. So again it is possible to know god, just as it is possible to know science by studying the textbooks.

So we are stuck with your statement. "You should know that god cannot be known." It is impossible to say whether god can be known or not, because we either don't know god, or we know god but we don't know that we know god.

Yes, God cannot be known. We may know only of what He knows that He imparts to us through His words and through everything that He set up around us for us to continue with life thus we know that we came from God. We know God through what we give and take from beings beside us (be it love ones, friends, foe, pet, environment) that also came from Him. And we may know nothing more of God beyond what He made known for us and through His words and wisdom we know exactly what He is to us and what we are to Him but to completely know God as if He was born like us when He created us that cannot be known.

Deuteronomy 29:29
"The LORD our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.

Most people seem to think it's taboo to admit aloud, or even to themselves, that the perfection of God's understanding is not only possible for man to comprehend, but it's quite easy. These are the very same people who believe God can be carried around in their back pocket as well, so to speak.

I understand God's will perfectly fine; understanding my place in the grand order of things isn't so difficult to accept, either. Now I've absolutely no problem admitting that to myself or anyone else, but what I don't understand is the necessity of the 'spirituality insecure' to question my understanding of something they admittedly proclaim to be unknown to themselves.

It puts a smile on my face when they try, though.

You know God by recognizing you are one with God.

I can accept this as a 'theory that can't be proven'. Otherwise I would fear for the mental health of someone who claims he is a part of an Omnipotent Being :)

A human being can not know anything about 'god', the mere notion is ridiculous. Even if there was a 'god', a Perfect Being that created the Universe, we have no means to even begin to fathom anything about him, or his wishes. But to claim one knows the thoughts of God - or to write an entire book about it, is pure madness. If at least it was a good book, but sadly it's rather poorly written. So either 'god' needs to visit a school for aspiring writers, or he had noting to do with this book. I wonder which one is the case...

You should know that the great crab god Franklin cannot truly be known, you should know that the invisible blue zebra named ginger cannot truly be known, you should know that nothing cannot be known.  Silly statements?  They convey absolutely no information, predictions, or probabilities?  Now you know how I feel when I read, "You should know that God cannot be known".  It provides absolutely NO evidence that speaks towards the truth of your claims, that an invisible sky-god exists.

Why are you following someone who you admit you dont know? how can you be sure that he aint the devil if you dont know him? Its like marrying someone you have not met and talked to personally.

Um, believing in God is different from knowing God. Do you believe a person because you know that person? You believe that person because of what he does that speaks of who he is. And since nobody can tell where everything came from but surely it came from something or is created by something – the Creator or God – you believe in Him because what you see - the things around you that speak of his creation, even yourself - are what came from him. Do you have faith in your mother because you came from her womb or your father because you were generated from his sperm? You have faith in your mother because she nurtured you and your father because he provided for you. What they do is what made you know them. What they created – you - would make you know them. But apart from that you can’t really know them. You can only know them as your mother or father but the totality of their person, their personal history, can’t be completely known to you.
